Meet the 2016 AYC Staff
2016 AYC Staff
Rob Dresser - Program Director. Rob is new to this program this year. Before this summer he worked at many different sailing programs as a head sailing instructor and race coach/director. He is a level two US sailing instructor who is still an active racer in the lightning class. As a kid, he grew up racing many different boats and cruising on the family sailboat all over. He raced in high school for Hingham High School and in college he started the Plymouth State University sailing club. In the winters Rob is a ski coach at Waterville Valley and for the Abenaki Ski Team.
Terence O’Brien - Head Instructor. Terence has spent many summers at AYC. Starting in the beginner’s class he quickly joined the Opti Race team, continuing on to race 420s and Lasers. He worked as an instructor at AYC for two summers before heading out to California where he volunteered with City Year, an AmeriCorps-affiliated education non-profit. Terence spent last summer in England and Europe working backpacking. This past year Terence was a freshman at the University of Maine Orono where he studies Physics and Computer Science. He is excited at the opportunity to return to AYC and share his passion for the club and for sailing, and to bring his experience together with the awesome staff of Instructors to lead an absolutely fantastic Junior Sailing Program this summer!
Katherine Bertolini - Instructor. Katherine will be a junior instructor for AYC this summer. She is excited to be returning for her 9th summer at AYC, after participating in both the junior sailing program and the race team. When not out on the water, Katherine plays ice hockey and runs cross country for her high school. She also sails for MSST in the spring. She will be entering her senior year at York High School this fall.
Will Duffy - Instructor. Will is a rising sophomore at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He sailed in AYC’s junior sailing program for several years before spending a summer as an instructor-in-training, eventually becoming an instructor. This summer will be his third year as an instructor at AYC. A dedicated student and aspiring musician, Will spends his offseason studying astronomy and physics and practicing saxophone. When not on the water at AYC, he can often be found with his ukulele singing or teaching, sometimes at the same time.
Elliott Gear - Instructor. Elliott has been sailing at AYC since he was 8 years old. Starting in Optis, he has progressed through nearly all of the classes offered at AYC, and he has been a member of both the Opti and 420/ Laser Race Teams for the past 8 years. When not sailing in the spring and summer, he enjoys running track, running cross-country and skiing. He will be entering his senior year at York High School this fall.
Austin Kennie - Instructor. Austin is a rising sophomore at Hobart. He has been sailing and racing at AYC for the past six years, in the Galleons class, and on the 420 race team. When not sailing Austin enjoys, playing guitar, and snowboarding.
Madi Lavigne - Instructor. Madi has been sailing at AYC for ten years, and has been a junior instructor for the past two summers. When she’s not sailing, Madi goes to York High School where she’ll be a senior in September. She also is on the cross country and the winter track teams and sails for MSST in the spring. Madi is wicked excited to be a full instructor this season.
McV LaPointe - Opti Coach. McV has been a part of the AYC sailing community since he was old enough to sail, he attends Fort Lewis College in Durango Colorado and will be a junior this coming fall. McV plays defense for the school’s club lacrosse team and enjoys rock climbing in his down time. This summer he will be coaching the Opti race team for the second year, and will also be helping coach the 420 race team.
Eric Morrison - 420/Laser Coach. Eric is starting his senior year at the University of Maine this fall. He is majoring in New Media and has minors in Graphic Design and Computer Science. During the school year he also works as a User Experience Designer and Project Manager at ASAP Media Services where he designs mobile apps, websites, and builds virtual reality environments. He also loves hiking, skiing, biking, camping, and of course sailing. He grew up sailing at AYC as well as on his parents' 47' Catalina. He has spent many years racing Optis, 420's and Lasers. This is his seventh year working at AYC.
Sammie Gaudette - Junior Instructor. Sammie has participated in sailing classes and on the 420 race team. She attends Berwick Academy and enjoys field hockey and lacrosse. Sammie is excited to share her passion for sailing with others.
Olivia Jarvis - Junior Instructor. Olivia has been sailing with AYC for 7 years and has participated in both the Opti and 420 race team. She attends Brooks School where she plays soccer, squash, and lacrosse. Olivia lives in Dover, New Hampshire with her parents and younger brother.
Ava Scholes - Junior Instructor. Ava has been sailing since the age of 10. She has spent 5 of the last 6 years at AYC, where she continued up through almost all of the offered classes. Ava also likes to draw, play lacrosse, play volleyball, and ski. She also played violin for 10 years before switching to piano this past fall. Ava is very excited to become more a part of the AYC community and help kids enjoy being out on the water.
Family Dinners at the York Harbor Reading Room
The York Harbor Reading Room has invited members of AYC to join them on their deck for their fabulous Family Suppers on Thursday nights, from June 19th to October 2nd, from 6 - 9 p.m.
Please call in advance for dinner reservations at (207) 363-2450 or 363-2562. There are occasionally a few exceptions to the dates for Reading Room special events. Check the club bulletin board or your 2015 member directory for these specific dates.
Dress is casual, but no jeans, and payment, which is new this year, is by credit card. Your guests are welcome, but they must dine on your tab, or pay separately by personal CHECK (new policy).
Club Hours of Operation
AYC will be open beginning June 27th through Labor Day weekend. Additionally we will be open weekends in September until Sunday, September 11th. The clubhouse is open:
You and your guests are always welcome during these hours, even if you just want to sit and chat under the umbrella at the end of the dock while you watch the hustle-bustle of the harbor.
